Beyond Personal Development to Social Evolution
Personal Development blogs are a wonderful phenomenon — they represent a fascinating, revolutionary step in our conscious evolution as a species — but don’t you wonder how all this personal success is meant to reach beyond to, say, Social Development? Wouldn’t it be amazing if there were as many creative conversations taking place at this global scale with a global context and global goals — where are all the Universal Development blogs?
I believe we’re looking at them — the Honey of our Hive, the cells that make up the Comb…
Beyond Wishcraft
The Law of Attraction may be The Secret, but attraction in a vacuum results in black holes.
- What do you plan to manifest when you have everything you desire?
- At what point does your personal secret of success become something bigger than wishcraft?
- When you’ve mastered the laws of attraction, how do you ensure that you’re not just a black hole of happiness, a vacuum of light, a monarch in your personal bubble of Me-Me-Me?
Amy Oscar replied in a comment on Shift Your Spirits that she contested the idea of humanity’s Ascension as an All-or-Nothing prospect. I feel that Amy may have been replacing social, collective ascension with personal evolution.
Individual evolution, growth along your personal path, personal milestones, and moments of enlightenment live in the only place where that personal development can occur. You can’t evolve another person, you can’t turn on someone else’s switch, you don’t have the power (or the right) to control or to convert another person, no matter how grand and benevolent your intentions may be.
Our world has been absolutely and totally screwed by the mindset that you can shove another person, or a nation, down a path to betterment. Beating someone over the head with what works for you will never equal offering what works for you as an example for another to follow.
The Ascension of humanity — the ultimate utopian goal of the emerging universal human civilization — represents a synergy of personal development. My personal evolution or enlightenment, combined with yours, and then added to another person’s, and then another’s… they all add up to Ours and Then Some.
Where is all this personal development meant to lead us if not to a civilization populated by a majority of enlightened individuals? The Trophy belongs to the team — there is no Honey but for the Hive.
- What good is your achieving a state of total personal bliss if you have no one to share that experience with?
- So what if you get everything you want and desire if everyone else in the world around you is still suffering and wanting?
- How long could your blissful little bubble of enlightenment expect to survive if you’re looking out at misery and social injustice?
The goal is transparency — so that your light may shine out for those around you, but whether or not they choose to look within what you’ve created — see themselves in the reflection of your bubble, and model some part of your example — is entirely up to them.
You have the power to turn on your light, no one else’s. But your light can inspire another to flip his switch into the On position. You can publicly share your blueprint, so that anyone who is interested may borrow from your success, the shortcuts you’ve discovered on your path, the best possible course…
So, the development of humanity on a global scale occurs at the level of the individual — billions of times over.
Your personal spiritual purpose is just one switch to throw — secure joy in the consciousness you maintain — there is nothing else that you control. Your personal spiritual path becomes a mission — you become a lightworker — when you simply choose to make the surface of your bubble transparent.
Lightworking is ultimately passive. You shine out. You don’t willfully shine into anything or anyone.
It is the observer — the reader — the audience — the neighbor — the person beside you who chooses to raise her shades and let your light inside to help her illuminate her own world.
By simply making your light available — which I assume is at least part of the reason why you blog — your mission succeeds.
When a visitor subscribes to your blog, she’s drawing up the shades. Yes, it matters how many people you reach.

I have a friend who doesn’t get this whole blogging thing - thinks it’s terribly self-indulgent, that ‘reality’ is out there where he’s living…
And I too question why I’m blogging, and what’s the point, and why am I sharing my life with people I don’t even KNOW.
But this post reminds me that sharing ourselves is all we CAN do when it comes to changing the world. We become that which we want to see, and then we allow other people to see it too.
I love that phrase - Universal Development!
Awesome
Who can argue with those who blog religiously and spiritually, and who stay true to themselves in the face of adversity, in the light of prosperity, and who continue to follow their bliss, in peace, with grace, for love and joy, and do so with compassion?
KL, Christopher,
Thanks so much for taking the message to heart.
There are tons of Personal Development blogs out there, there are tons of Problogging blogs out there — which is awesome, because I believe in the power of this technology and the social evolution that it All represents.
I hope to raise the level of the conversation here beyond just the latest WordPress user tip or marketing strategy to address questions like:
What does new media mean?
What are we blogging for?
What can we accomplish?
How can this change the world?
Someone paid me the compliment that this blog was equal parts inspiration and practical advice — I wish — that’s a lot to live up to, it’s a great goal to work towards, and I still have a way to go to be deserving of that testimonial.
I considered shifting the content of Shift Your Spirits entirely toward Universal Development, Futurism, Conscious Evolution, Ascension - the emergence of the universal human oversoul… But conversations (with K-L, in particular) showed me that it’s the teachers I’m speaking to, it’s the distribution of these ideas — and the inspiration to discover and share them — that could have the most impact.
Who’s going to do that with me, on the scale I’m talking about? You guys — those who have your lanterns out, already shining strong…
What are we in it for? What are we furthering?
I look forward to asking the questions that we can answer together — and I’m seeking out some doozies!
Slade,
Beautiful post. Sometimes it seems I’m not making any progress on my blog, but then I always remember that I am just one of many, contributing to this global change of direction.
If I reach a single person with what I do, then it will be enough if it’s the right one at the right time (and it will be)
Hey guys, just for the record, I wasn’t “calling Amy out on the carpet” or anything like that.
I plucked her comment as the only thoughtful, challenging representative of the “Hey, wait, what the hell are you talking about?” side of the conversation.
Amy’s comment sent me digging for more on this topic. And she has more to say on the idea as well:

Nothing but love and respect for Amy Oscar, here.
I associate what many refer to as the New Age | the Age of Aquarius | the Ascension | the New Earth | Heaven on Earth — there are many names, concepts, etc associated with this Idea of a major paradigm shift — with The Technological Singularity
Once again, very inspirational, Slade!
Here’s my take on this: We are all One, and the state of the individual is reflected in the state of the whole. If we grow and evolve spiritually, this raises the level of consciousness throughout our world and - heck, let’s really take ownership of how powerful we are - the galaxy, the Universe, even.
There is no selfish act possible in the area of spiritual development! Whether we serve the Divine within ourselves or within others … it is the same. So we can blog for entirely “selfish” reasons, and it still serves a greater purpose. We are increasing the amount of Light in the world, either way. And Slade, I LOVE the point that we can only be responsible for our own growth. So many people in this arena are focused on “helping” others - which we do best by serving ourselves. Actually - here’s my post on this:

Energetically, when we increase our vibration, we begin “activating” that resonance within every other life we touch - even if that contact happens through the power of the Internet. Those that feel this resonance can then either embrace it, or not. That part is not our job.
Thanks, Slade! I agree that you’re speaking to the teachers. Here’s to many, many more lanterns lighting up!
Blessings,
Andrea
You’ve got my gears in motion… big time. Great discussion, too much to go into here, think I’ll have to address this in a post!
