If You Must Pay for Blog Hosting

Okay, there are a million places you can get a free blog, and there are too many ways to create free web pages online to even mention.

Factor in the paid web page creation tools, licensed content management systems, hosting — the number of options is overwhelming. When I first started publishing online, I spent 4 MONTHS just Googling and comparing web hosting feature lists and price plans. I had precious few dollars to blow, and I had to spend them well.

LivingDot.com Hosting
I continued to get burned for two full years using crappy shared hosting services, before settling on the excellent company I’ve now been using since the beginning of 2005. I can’t recommend LivingDot enough.

For a few years I was a MovableType | SixApart advocate, all the way, and LivingDot was the first company officially sanctioned to offer MovableType installation and hosting. MT was a real bitch to set up, and LivingDot shaved frustrating DAYS off the front of my client project time-line. Since discovering them via the MovableType Professionals Network, I have encouraged all my clients to use them for any type of web hosting — migrating any client who already had web hosting for their business AWAY from whomever they’d been using.

Many web hosting companies offer comparable features, plans, and price points — so what important customer benefit could possibly quantify value in the hosting market?

Phenomenal Customer Service
I’ve never experienced such incredible turn-around times on Help Tickets — really, with any company, in any business.

If you’re ready to invest your web marketing overhead, already paying for shared hosting and unhappy with the experience, or wanting to upgrade your online presence, then by all means, I whole-heartedly endorse my hosts — I recommend LivingDot.com as an affiliate.

BUT — if You’re Just Starting to Blog
Don’t be in such a hurry to spend money to write — you should be MAKING money for creating original content — either directly or indirectly — not throwing it away. The fastest way to lose money publishing online is to start paying for services you don’t need yet. Just by reading this post you’re saving months of free time and you’re prepared to spend the perfect amount of money setting up your blog — $0 (nothing).

My goal with this Behind-the-Screens Problogging Blog is to show you just how much you can do for free. Please take my advice on this — you can always upgrade to more sophisticated tools and shared hosting, move existing content from one site to another, and if you use the services and strategies I recommend, you can take your digital assets with you into the future — including the all-important bottom-line priority of your endeavor — a list of opt-in subscribers.
