Seeing, Believing…

“When you believe it, then you will see it.” -– The Rav

“Tell me one last thing,” said Harry. “Is this real? Or has this been happening inside my head?”

“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”

“Well, how can that be real?”

“Prove that it is not,” said Xenophilius.

Hermione looked outraged.

“But that’s — I’m sorry, but that’s completely ridiculous! How can I possibly prove it doesn’t exist? … I mean, you could claim that anything’s real if the only basis for believing in it is that nobody’s proved it doesn’t exist!”

“Yes, you could,” said Xenophilius. “I am glad to see that you are opening your mind a little.”

All that we encounter, and contrive to encounter, contains relevance for soul. All that we experience, and contrive to experience, carries significance for spirit. Paradoxically, however, letting go requires hanging on; letting be requires clapping hands.

Slade, these words struck my wife and I powerfully when we read The Deathly Hallows, too. It was remarkable how much Harry’s experience with Dumbledore in that scene was reminiscent of a meditation, meeting a Guide — especially when Dumbledore mentions that Harry has “created” the surrounding scenery (King’s Cross). Obviously the perfect place for Harry to associate with transitions between places… :-)

    Jeff,

You know what’s really cool for me personally is that this occurs on page 723 (my birthday).

Since I was a kid, I’ve had a habit of divining books in this way — I look for a special message or answer to a question on page 723 of any book large enough. (Maybe this is why I get a particular rush out of reading enormous, fat books…)

Here’s the deal with how I “set up the divination” — the rules, if you will:
–I’m not allowed to just walk around picking up books and turning to page 723. The messages appear only in books I choose to read.
–I don’t ever look ahead (especially not in the final Harry Potter!) but I do remain aware of when I am likely to hit my page, and a conscious awareness that it’s coming up always prompts me to loosely form a question or expect to find a message.

The quote I’m referencing here appears at the end of a chapter, on a partial page — there’s not even a lot of “chances” to find a message on that page — and it was so strong that I immediately reached for a post-it flag. It was only after marking it that I looked down to see that it was my page. And it DID answer a question so beautifully.

    I laughed out loud…

Just another crumb of my magical world view…

    Slade,

With your lit degree you must have read War & Peace. What was Tolstoy’s little pearl of wisdom on 723? (Especially in light of your previous posts on war….)

    Peace & Light,
    Jewels
