The Evolution of Superstition & Sin 2.0

Are the purveyors of master manifestation messages starting to get on your nerves yet? I personally feel there’s a dangerous new form of quasi-religious superstition running rampant in our collective “wisdom.”

“Don’t you know your thoughts create 100% of your reality?!”

*implied fine-print: If your reality doesn’t mirror your aspirations, then you must just not be spiritual enough. You’re missing something. There’s something wrong with you. You must not be worthy of creating the life you want to lead…

Sin & Superstition — 21st Century Upgrade

Just when we thought we were finally free of centuries of immaturely-imagined, cruel, anthropomorphized gods who micromanage our thoughts and dole out smack downs with scattershot efficiency, here comes the Law of Attraction Wagon with Sin 2.0 (with optional Superstition plug-in).

Old Bearded White Dude & The Fat Lady in the Sky Become The Gotcha Universe
Now, it’s “the Universe” who hears your every thought and orders up a reality accordingly. Never mind that the most sweet-intentioned wishcraft gets trapped by Heaven’s spam filters while the shittiest micro-thoughts slip out to fertilize and water a garden of weeds.

“Oh, no! I had a negative thought. I just accidentally thought about what I don’t want instead of what I do. Take it back, take it back! I’m doomed!”
[wail]

Where’s the evidence of that kind/degree of power? If our thoughts were that fast and that total:

  • Five-year-old girls would be riding to kindergarten on unicorn ponies with hot pink manes
  • Asshole drivers and their vehicles would be raptured from the highways
  • Mid-level managers on power trips would turn to dust under florescent tube lights between drab gray cubicles
  • Theocratic dictators would voluntarily crawl back in their holes after being shamed off the world stage by laugh riots
  • No one’s son would grow up to be a wife-beater and nobody’s daughter would marry one
  • Pharmaceutical companies would produce cures as rapidly as they produce expensive never-ending treatments
  • Your one-and-only romantic soul mate would have a tattoo that lights up in neon when he says hello to you the first time
  • Your ATM balance would resemble the storage space in your Gmail account

Do your thoughts create 100% of your reality?

Do you believe that your thoughts create 100% of your reality?

What do you really think? Be honest.

Do your thoughts affect your reality in a powerful way?
Absolutely. Keyword Affect — not create.

Do we have a collective ability over time to pool our intentions and affect our shared reality in amazingly orchestrated improvements?
Absolutely. Yes, we can.

But there are tons of variables.

Don’t ever let any self-appointed guru convince you that you “contracted” to have cancer in this lifetime; that you were sitting up there in the ether thinking “Hmm — a debilitating physical defect would really be the way to do it this time around;” that your soul chose to be born into an environment of sexual abuse “so you could learn the hard way.”

The whole earth experience is The Hard Way. Maybe you did choose from a spiritual perspective to come to this world in spite of the dangers and hardships, the organic, ever-changing, dynamic obstacle course.

To the Glassy-eyed Delusion-hocking Unicorn-jockey LofA Magic Carpet Co-pilots who keep bleating and tweeting your endless stream of Barbie Dream World Bumper-stickers:

  • Who are you really trying to convince?
  • Will saying it enough make it so?
  • How much affiliate commission do you make off selling the message?

    Brilliant! I particularly liked this:

“Do your thoughts affect your reality in a powerful way?
Absolutely. Keyword Affect — not create.”

Don’t we have enough examples of spiritual wisdom or religion being hijacked by ego? Just turn on the news. Man, that ego is one persistent bugger!

This is great, Slade. It’s funny you are writing about this, because recently I have noticed some old gunky childish superstitious beliefs coming to the surface for me. I think it’s my way of holding onto the reigns of control in a world that is very painful at times. Frankly, all I have to do is think of the life of someone like Jesus. Was he missing something? ;-) When you think of Jesus, and then re-read your asterisk at the beginning of your post, it’s even more ridiculous-sounding, isn’t it?

    Thanks, again.

THANK YOU. Way to keep things grounded. We can be spiritual *and* fully in reality.

If my thoughts created 100% of my reality, then my favorite anti-guru (YOU!) would be ruling the world by now. :-) You rock, Slade! As soon as I can stop laughing from this one, I’m passing it along…

I am absolutely CONVINCED that “the Universe” has a fabulous sense of humor. Factor that in, folks, factor that in.

  7. Deb on June 29th, 2009 3:26 am

Soooo funny! Great to see humor regarding thoughts. My positive thoughts would be beaming me up and on my way to Disney world every time I was frustrated with people around me.

  8. Angie on June 29th, 2009 5:02 am

Wow. Finally some sense prevails. Thanks Slade.
The whole L of A (mainstream version) always struck me as lacking compassion. As a psychologist I get to see the inner machinations of lots of people and I swear to you that people do not ask for stuff to happen to them. Their thoughts did not contribute to their circumstances and to be told that it has is the most invalidating and careless thing.
I don’t want to get everything I want, I would learn zip, and frankly, sometimes I don’t know what is best for me. Thankfully the universe does.

Glad to see I’m not the only one fed up with instant spirituality (”No actual thought required! Just put it in the microwave!”)

I absolutely believe in the power of thought. That doesn’t mean I need to put everything I experience into easily explained compartments of a simplistic, feel-good worldview.

    How about instead of:
“*implied fine-print: If your reality doesn’t mirror your aspirations, then you must just not be spiritual enough. You’re missing something. There’s something wrong with you. You must not be worthy of creating the life you want to lead…”

    We read:
“*implied fine-print: If your reality doesn’t mirror your aspirations, then what are you allowing in your life that does reflect your aspirations? Are you content with this? Is it your passion? Are you living life or is it living you?”

Congratulations to you for seeing the real lesson in the Law of Attraction: Personal Responsibility and Living Joyously. While it may pander to some peoples base emotions, overall it helps others help themselves to a beginning or continuation of some sort of spiritual growth. The fact that others, many others, get lost in the details and anal obsessiveness of guarding and guiding their thoughts carefully is an almost humorous situation- yet each one is on the verge of discovering something great about themselves, and that’s the cosmic joke to me!

I was an 18 year old PFC in a Ft. Huachuca, AZ training program right before the first Gulf War. A Special Forces Staff Sergeant also attending the same same school was near me during one break and overheard my conversation with someone wearing a 1st Cavalry Division patch. I had told them that their patch, the head of a horse with a black line running through it was actually a badge of dishonor, as they had retreated from a battle in the Korean war. SSG Guillermo walked quickly to me, had me stand at parade rest, and loudly explained to me, that I had not been there, had not been in those soldiers shoes, and had no reason nor voice with which to belittle their actions. And then I did 100 push ups, repeating “I will honor those soldiers before me”

Those reading your posts will almost certainly know this, but those who do not may struggle to understand that it’s the middle way between LoA and their own spirituality they’re trying to balance. If the LoA can help others to find their way, then let them do what they need to do and help them when you can.

    Big hugs,

    J.Henry

Since I am one of those who has come to understand that we do indeed create our reality, I offer the following as an alternate version of the fine print.

Firstly I would suggest that none of us have a reality that totally mirrors our aspirations, it mirrors where we have put our focus - consciously or unconsciously. Part of the agreement we made in entering this game we call life was that we would experience contrast - a gap between what we want and what we experience. It is in this contrast that the juice occurs - the inspiration to create something different.

Secondly I would say that it has nothing to do with how spiritual you are or even whether you are a channel. In my experience there are many in both of those categories who attract more than their share of contrast. And there are many spiritually unconscious people who remain focused upon what they want, and create very successfully.

As Abraham through Esther Hicks says “You never get it wrong, and you never get it done”. So there is never anything wrong with you, and there is certainly no question of unworthiness. If you are not getting what you want, then you are simply allowing your focus to be a little too much on the unwanted side of things.

To consider an extreme example of something like cancer. Of course none of us had a prior contract to have dis-ease of any sort. Our physical health is never-the-less part of our creation, and a life spent with too much focus on the negative, can over time, produce some unwanted effects. We are the conductor of the orchestra that is our body, and if the conductor is unclear on what the music is to sound like, then disorder can result.

There is of course much more to this story than a few words can convey. As always we are trying to describe the infinite in finite terms, so these descriptions of the nature of what-is, will always be approximations. There is a little more detail on all of this on our site under http://www.loa-c.com/CW.

I’m not suggesting that that may not be some who would imply fine print along the lines you suggest. It’s just that they are not in my reality and I was wanting to convey that there is perhaps another version possible. Thanks for stimulating the discussion.

From Terah today at 10:15 PDT ..

“It is very much like building the staircase of your life. As you climb up it, it’s not there until you focus upon it. It doesn’t exist until you pay attention to it. You climb up it, and when you look back, there’s nothing behind you - just the Now.”

“The way it’s set up in your world, things simply fade away when you take your attention off them. The staircase behind you stops existing because you are no longer facing that way. The one in front of you that you climb, is only there because you are focusing on it and you expect it to be. That is your life you see. You can build those stairs in any direction and you can go anywhere you want to - your own personal staircase in the sky.”

“Everything you believe is going to come to you. Somehow or other it will show up. These are the answers of the Universe. This is universal law. It’s actually quite complicated but from your perspective it’s also extremely simple. This is all you need to create the life you want.”

Let me gather myself while I stop laughing. I might need another minute or so …

Okay, now let me try to leave an insightful comment.

I am SO in agreement that our thoughts are NOT what create our reality. That would be insane! On the other hand, I DO think we are the powerful creators of our experience … just because my life has been a ridiculous insta-manifestation experience for the last eight months, for better or worse.

Thoughts are just one component of who we are as energetic Beings. And it’s our entire energetic state that is reflected in life’s big mirror.

Thanks for the image of my four-year old girl being able to turn herself into a mermaid at will, by the way ….

    Blessings,
    Andrea

    Slade,
This is why I love reading Shift Your Spirits!! You really shifted me today:0) I needed a good laugh and an even bigger reality check!! I love this it is so true! I know my 5 and 3 year old would be the first ones in line for the unicorn with the hot pink mane!!! Have a wonderful July 4th weekend!

Didn’t quite get the point first, but your comment pointed the way, Andrea.

Of course my thoughts alone don’t create my reality - after all, they’re just thoughts; I believe I am much larger than that.

In the words of Gandhi: you must be the change you wish to see in the world - BE the change; thinking about it won’t go all the way!

  16. Julia on July 3rd, 2009 5:27 pm

@Robin - I’m sorry, I don’t want to come across as a “flamer” and I hope Slade will approve my comment…

First of all, it bugs me that you’re the only one here among the commentators who had to post TWO comments - and taken all together it looks like you’ve at least “published” enough words here to rival the author’s original post.

Even still, there are now THREE links that I can see to your website — which is a Law of Attraction web site. That’s all okay, I suppose, but what actually really irritates me is this

“Terah — date and time — blah blah blah quotes” — as if, what? Because “Terah” says “this is Universal law” that’s some kind of done deal argument?

We should all just say “Oh, well, Esther Hicks, Abraham, and Terah said this is so, therefore that’s some kind of gospel?”

Whatever — I hate to be rude, but it seems to me that you are exactly the kind of person who has a vested interest in arguing for The LofA Status Quo…

Is what Slade or his guides have to say any more “true” than Abraham, Terah, or whoever else? No, probably not — but it’s at least AS potentially true.

Now I’m being a hypocrite because I’m writing a long comment too — but I just have to say that this is Slade’s blog, I come here to read HIS words, and the reason I do is because he says something different or at least says it in a different way and you know what?

He often “reads” my mind and writes the same things I would write. I can’t say the same at all for the Hicks duo… and Terah? I have no idea who that even is, but these quotes are reruns of the same ole, same ole.

“If you keep saying it, will that make it true?”

Queen of the optomists here. I do think positive thoughts and affirmations are pieces of the creative puzzle.

That said, I am a little over all the twitter/facebook posts - who can out do whom on LOA philosophy. What I would give for someone just to post a dirty joke to lighten up my day. Maybe if I do a quick 100 affirmations, it will appear on my wall. One can only hope…..

  18. Licia Berry on July 14th, 2009 3:11 pm

Wonderful….I have said for a long time that we CO-create with the other factors that make up ALL That IS, kind of like having mutliple dance partners at one time…if we created it all by ourselves, how could we brush our teeth? Let me explain.

I have always felt that everything has consciousness, perhaps not of the same kind as ours, but that there is inherent intellgience in EVERYTHING, down to the last quantum particle. I believe we are seeing this in the new science now.

So, when I looked at trees and rocks and such, I could feel them looking back at me as a kid. As I have aged, I see that the particles that make up other things, what appear to be inanimate objects, also are in service to all of creation and part of that intelligence, too.

For example, the moleclues that make up a toothbrush are connected to one another, bound by some kind of fabric, albeit agreement, to come together as a toothbrush. How could I pick up my toothbrush and brush my teeth of those particles were not also agreeing to dance with me by acting as my toothbrush?

In our very bodies we have a community of 50 trillion cells, each having their particular jobs to do, each co-creating with one another to “manifest” this body that we live in. Any one cell that thought it could “create its reality” without the assistance and support of all the cells around it would be sadly mistaken. Perhaps this is what cancer is…rogue cells that attempt to act outside of the flow of All Life, causing imbalance and havoc in their environment and perhaps disasterous results unless they are quickly corrected. This is a microcosmic model of how we operate in the web of life.

Perhaps it is my indian blood….but I feel it is disrespectful for us to believe we act in isolation in this grand web of life…we are all connected, with EVERYTHING…and so to create in our lives, I would challenge anyone to try to live their life without touching, interacting with, or receiving the support of another aspect of All Creation.

    Well said, Licia Berry!

I just wanted to say that I think this article might be misunderstanding the mechanisms behind how LoA works; its not that thoughts instantaneously manifest your desires, because obviously that is not true if you have ever thought of wanting $10 million or watched kids imagining and hoping to ride a pink unicorn.

It is that one’s dominant thoughts or beliefs create one’s reality OVER TIME. Critically, if one has a high degree of resistance to the idea that one can create such a wonderful reality (i.e. by being highly skeptical, or focusing on the negative reality that one is currently experiencing), then that reality can not be manifested. This all according to what I’ve learned by reading material from Abraham (Esther and Jerry Hicks).

The big factor in the Law of Attraction is really in living the “art of allowing”; which is all about releasing resistance and focusing on the positive aspects of one’s experience.

As for the “superstition and sin” aspect of the law of attraction (i.e. skepticism), all people really need to do is pick up a book from Abraham for $10 dollars, or watch a few video clips on youtube for free, and then just focus on feeling better or believing and hoping that what they desire is on their way. Its so simple, and within just a few weeks of moderate practice one could easily determine whether the law of attraction is valid or not in one’s own experience. Of course you have to put aside your skepticism for a minute and just try it out :). But its well worth it, in my opinion, to try it out when the potential rewards are so great!
