What’s Your Spirit Guide’s Name?

Of all the requests I receive for Spirit Guide Readings, the Number One, all-time, most-asked question is “Can you tell me the name of my spirit guide?”

There’s not even a close second… Which makes perfect sense, really — if you’re going to connect with anyone, you need a proper introduction. Can you think of anyone you’d call yourself “close” to whose name you don’t know?

And who could be closer to you than your own guardian angels and spirit guides?

I encourage you to connect with your spirit guides on your own, if at all possible, and that includes discovering their names. In some cases, as with the entities we universally call personal guardian angels, you will need to give them names.

I believe we all have these benevolent entities around us and that to some degree you ARE able to feel them and hear them. No matter who you are, you have psychic, intuitive abilities – they can be strengthened, developed. Your natural extra-sensory perception may not be at all like what you think it is, your particular skill-level and consciousness may vary from another person’s, certain events in your life may trigger or enhance these abilities…

As challenging as it may be for me to put these intangible issues into words, I continue to aspire toward the mission of motivating you to explore and develop your intuition. Consciousness, spirit, and the ways the mind works are difficult to pin down — sometimes it seems the best that I can do is dance around them, always circling, with no clear chance of leading you straight to some magic-bullet sure-fire shortcut.

I can’t explain to you how to be you, I can’t walk your path, I can’t give you a guaranteed fool-proof recipe for “being psychic” anymore than I could give you the blueprint for “how to love.” I can set an example, I can be as open as possible about how I do it… I can share ideas about general areas for you to look inside, but what you’ll find there will ultimately be something you create(d).

It’s like writing about how to have perfect pitch or a god-given artistic ability — there are tips and techniques for developing what you have — and you can learn and improve in any area of your life you set your mind to…

As much as I wish I could tell you exactly where to find your clairaudient intuition — your ability to communicate with your spirit guides — even if your inherent psychic abilities were indeed hidden in a specific cabinet in your kitchen, the best guidance I could offer — in this format — would be something like “Where do you keep your can-opener? It’s likely to be in that drawer, or somewhere close…”

I’ve struggled over the past year with on-again/ off-again policies regarding doing private, one-on-one Readings for other people. I’m constantly soul-searching how best to share my gift. I must tell you something I haven’t been consciously aware of until very recently:

Honestly? I feel GUILTY about my clairaudience.

For most of my life, I was paralyzed by a fear of anyone knowing that I “hear shit” and slapping a psycho label on me — one that’s stitched into a straight-jacket with a life-time membership to my own private padded cell. I’ve clearly faced this fear, only to be confronted with a new, less obvious emotion.

Guilt. Something very close to “survivor’s guilt,” actually:

Why me and not you?

  • If I had been born with a beautiful voice, would I feel guilty if everyone around me was tone-deaf by comparison? No, I’d sing for you.
  • If I had an eye for color and a flair for illustration, would I feel guilty if you told me you were color-blind? What if you commissioned me to draw a picture for you — why wouldn’t I?
  • If I knew the name of someone you could call up who would change your life forever, would I feel “guilty” about telling you?

Look, the bottom-line is: I am an open-channel. I am a clairaudient intuitive. The one thing I can detect 99% of the time is the name of the spirit entities who attend you.

I don’t entirely understand why I can, I can’t entirely explain to you how it works… it’s not my place to decide for you what you even DO with that information. But I have been told, time and time again, that I’m not supposed to deny it or keep it to myself when it could help you.

Readings for Everyone
The full-blown email readings I prepare are on average five or six pages long. Each one takes about three hours to prepare. The turn-around time, at best, is a week or two. There’s a limit to how many of those I can schedule, at any price.

Telling you the name of your spirit guides — on the other hand — takes only a few minutes. If you want to know the name of your spirit guide, I can certainly tell you. The Name Reading is the quickest, most reasonably-priced, simplest way I can come up with to share my gift with as many people want me to.

Whether I feel guilty about it or just get over myself… I find myself saying, over and over again, to other people

“Your life purpose is defined by what other people ASK of you, more than it is about what you want to give.”

The turning point in my personal relationship with my guides, the turning point in my life — began — not with an awareness of their presence, that’s been as long as I can remember — but with the day I finally said “Who the hell are you and why are you here?”

That’s how the real conversations got started — the results of what I continue to learn from engaging my guides in a literal way are nothing short of amazing. My life didn’t change over-night, the “movie version” would be a little slow and dull… But it all started to change the day I finally asked and received the answer to a very simple question “Who are you?”

You are not alone. Find out who’s there with you and start talking to them. To some of you it may sound a little silly — but it becomes easier to approach your intuition literally when there’s an identity there to work with. It becomes harder to dismiss the results as vague or strange when they become familiar.

Allow me to introduce you to your spirit guides…

[...] I certainly continue to struggle with a kind of “survivor’s guilt” regarding my “success” as a professional spiritual blogger and intuitive medium — and that site is barely monetized! I still catch myself reverting to age-old bad habits — I actually treat my greatest gifts as a shame — that sounds crazy! But it’s an authentic emotion. I do find it easier to accept compensation for this blog and the “more useful, more tangible, more quantifiable” information I share in the form of tutorials. [...]

    Okay, dude — I’ll bite!

I have regular contact with a cast of characters that I think of as “my guides” through meditation: Apollo, my anima, Cernunnos, Bridget sometimes. But there are also shadowy figures I sometimes glimpse in the background, or who have appeared in one or two meditations and told me that they’ve got my back, and I haven’t seen them since. There’s one fellow in particular — he looks like a cross between Gandalf and the Shaggy Man of Oz — he laughs all the time! I usually meet him on my way to seeing someone else. Intriguing and mysterious as hell. And most of the folks I talk to are there because I’ve specifically asked to see them, invited them in. Who are the guides who have been with me my whole life? I have no idea who they are.

I’m headed right over to drop the donation in the box…

I find myself surprised that the number one question by far is asking what are the guides’ names. But I have had a chronic lifelong difficulty in remembering names, so that may be why I don’t relate strongly to that question.

I have not been convinced that names are of great significance to my guides, with whom I communicate all the time. I sort of feel they regard it like a choice of clothing, just put on what is appropriate for the moment and the purpose of the moment, then let it go.

I think the names may be more of a convenience for us than for them, but since names are hardly a convenience for me, it has not been an issue in my communications with them.

I do know the names of various groups of beings I communicate with, but not individuals. And I am certainly not clairaudient, which doubtless makes a huge differenece too.

Please do not take my remarks as any implication your work is not useful and significant, I do not mean that at all! I merely was observing how differently we see(hear) things and then process the information we receive.

Thanks for posting, and go ahead and ditch that guilt thing, the sooner the better! You obviously have a great deal of value to share with others.

    Lexi,

It’s interesting that you use the metaphor “choice of clothing” as this is the exactly idea that I was after when I talked about your spirit guides employing a form of “drag.”

I, too, tend to communicate most often with “groups” of entities — in everyday “conversation” I address my entire collective posse as “guardies” (a somewhat childish endearment held over from when I was a kid).

Even though I am most likely to “hear” (please use that term in the most multi-dimensional way) Jane — who serves as an on-going mouthpiece or “spokes entity.” I just as regularly receive information in the form of music from DJ.

I think the approach you describe is totally effective and dare I say “healthy” — the most important aspect being that you engage them and feel that connection. (I do however think you discount just how clairaudient you may actually indeed be… No doubt the phenomenon feels normal to you and you may dismiss it more than realize. No worries, there, that is again, ideal in its own way…)

But, I suppose why so many people want a name to work with, is that the communication remains too abstract for them — they can’t get past that “vague, shadowy, not-so-sure” feeling — the names change the dynamic in that awareness.

Even in writing, your voice changes dramatically when you are communicating to “a big vague audience out there” as opposed to addressing the conversation to a specific person. If you write articles, you need only look at the difference between the voice you and attitude you assume as compared with, say, an email to a friend.

The Big, Public Voice is unfocused and formal, while the familiar is personal and immediate. I am speaking as a writer to another writer, here, but there is a comparable phenomenon in prayer and everyday dialog.

    Jeff,

You share a similar “magical world view” as well as a deep exploration of your “rich inner landscape.” I experience the same set of willfully invoked entities, versus the mysterious, versus the bit players, versus the regular supporting cast.

Because I’ve astral-traveled around in your creative, spiritual landscape, I am very aware of how it compares to my own. For those who haven’t witnessed our personal correspondence, let me mention that my own guides shift in identity in a way that conforms to Jeff’s world. Not unlike how Lexi mentioned, it’s like encountering the same actors cast in parts in a different “reality” — different costumes, different style, almost a different “culture” yet recognizable.

I’m interested to see who I can separate from your cast, but I definitely have friends there to introduce me… And, not to mention, it’s YOUR guided meditation that helped me identify that Bench downstairs in the Garden outside my Tower…

You are dead on with the remarks about me using clairaudience. I actually felt a bit silly the instant after I submitted my comment because I thought, “For heaven’s sake, I hear clear explicit statements from my guides, that is clairaudience. Oh well…”

I am not sure why I missed it first time through, but I really wonder about your statement, “Your life purpose is defined by what other people ASK of you, more than it is about what you want to give.”

Egads. By life purpose do you mean soul task, soul purpose, or something else?

I certainly do not see my soul purpose coming from what people ask of me. Cripe, I would be wasting most of my healing energies propping up people’s non-functional patterns with band aids instead of deep transformation if that were the case.

Lots of people don’t want to change anything, they just want the stuff they are doing to somehow work even if it is dysfunctional. Not my purpose to support that request!

I try to bring my soul purpose through as clearly and undistorted as possible. Then whoever wants to participate in that manner with me will do so, and those who do not, well they are welcome to follow their path too. But my path is not determined by popular vote.

    Slade,

When I get back to my e-mail after this crazy week I’ll give you some examples, but, for now, suffice it to say that my “dreams” have become much more vivid & specific after our name reading. Yes, you are doing the right thing by offering this service!

You are a gift, Slade, and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in thinking that. Especially not on this blog! ;-)

is it possible to receive their names in random “thoughts”

  15. Slade | Shift Your Spirits on March 29th, 2008 4:00 pm

    Absolutely!

If you have generally been working to discover personal information from your guides, that request hangs around in your conscious, your subconscious, your environment as an “open ticket” — the responses may be a recurring thought or pattern of information in relatively quick succession.

But if a name seems to keep surfacing over the course of a few days or so, following soon after your request to receive it, pay attention to those “random thoughts.”

Your guides may use all kinds of information stored in your mind. They may also pull faces of people you know who share that name…

Is it possible to enhance clairaudience?? I am a shocking meditator as 1. I have a habit to try and meditate when somehting is happening such as the washing machine running, or something on the stove that will need my attention etc etc or 2. i fall asleep. I do want a “relationship” with my spirit guides/angels but don’t know how to go about it due to lack of time.

I have tried your meditation link but that link won’t allow downloads, and how do I know that my spirit guides are being truthfull?

Do spirit guides/angels give you for want of a better word “a job discription”? ie: what their purpose is in your life?? I had some interesting ones come up and in my imagination I could feel what they would lok like. I have troubles visualizing but I can feel very strongly and am very sensitive to energy/ies.

    Hi!
Well I just wanted to share with you my experience of trying to get my guides name. I meditated, and asked specifically for a name, which I received and thought - “gosh what an unusual name”. I thought about the name all the next day, and by the following day - mysteriously- I had forgotten it. This is highly unusual for me, I’m usually really good with names and things, but try as I might I just couldn’t get it back! After much frustration with myself, I went back into meditation to ask my guide again, and the answer I got was in the form of a song! The name of the song is ” Just call me angel of the morning”.
What a beautiful sense of humour! Gotta love that!!!

I was wondering if you would be able to tell me my spirit guides name and a little bit about them if you dont mind?

    xx

  21. Slade Roberson on December 2nd, 2009 8:06 pm

    Nasreen,

I’d be honored to do a reading for you and tell you about your guides, any names I pick up, any messages they have for you. I do require some more personal information from you than a comment allows.

I have an email reading devoted to the information you’re seeking:
    Spirit Guide Name Reading

    Thanks!

  22. Jordan on December 5th, 2009 5:30 pm

    Hey Slade,

So, I think I have met my spirit guide. No, I know I’ve met my spirit guide. I saw her right there in front of me during meditation. It didn’t take long at all for me to see her. She is so beautiful with a smile that makes me smile every time I think of her face. She told me her name was Sahara. I cried when I first met her. I’m a very emotional person and meeting her brought tears to my eyes.
I was so shocked of that first meeting and I was a little unsure if it was all real. But that night, while watching Man vs. Food (one of my new favorite shows), the host went to a casino called Sahara and so that name is is big flashy colors, right in front of my face, not even three hours after our meeting. So, that pretty much settled it. Haha, I have found my spirit guide.
I try to take the time to find her again and to ask her questions but sometimes I feel like i’m making up the answers instead of them just coming to me. Maybe I’m not making them up but I’ll ask a question and half-way through my question, I hear the answer. What can I do to better my connection with her?

  23. Slade Roberson on December 5th, 2009 9:24 pm

    Jordan,

That’s a great story - thanks for sharing. I can assure you that your experience is very similar to many, many others — you’re certainly “doing everything right.”

The synchronicity or sign of confirmation on the name you received is exactly the kind of sign we request during client readings — I’ve seen that phenomenon happen again and again.

What can you do to further develop this connection?

Honestly, you would be a perfect candidate for my course Talking to Your Spirit Guides — which is listed under the Classes tab in the navigation, along with The Money Shift and Automatic Writing Lessons.

There’s a lot you can do to initiate these experiences on an on-going basis — and it’s not difficult. Don’t mean to sound like an infomercial, but it’s more than I could ever reply in a comment, not to mention already created and waiting for you — Check it out — http://sladeroberson.com/classes
