You Can Hear Your Spirit Guides
Intention #1 — I am open…
If you wish to communicate more effectively with your spirit guides, the number one thing you need to tell yourself and your guides is that you are open to their presence and to receiving their guidance. You can’t simultaneously doubt them and depend on them.
If you’re an affirmations person, put this intention on a sticky note on your mirror or scrolling across your computer screensaver.
You wouldn’t be here, reading this message, if you weren’t open to hearing it, right now. You’re already working with your guides, you talk to them, you’ve heard them, you’ve acted upon the messages you’ve received from them, you’ve noted the powerful synchronicities and serendipities that occur because of them — and you know very well what it’s like to receive guidance and not act upon it. Recall a time when you knew, but you doubted, you hesitated, you did nothing in response to the still small voices within you… and you later regretted it.
Your impulse to read this post is a testament to your acting upon the whispers of your spirit, to your ability to follow the small clues that lead you…
Even if you think you’re skeptical or you think you’re just curious, you feel on a much deeper level that there really is something more going on — an inkling, a hunch. You’re ready to develop further, you’ve asked for the opportunity, and here you are.
You are here because you are at least “interested” right? Intellectually interested; curious. But ask yourself are you truly open to receiving information from your spirit guides? (I’ve heard from several students recently that they surprised themselves when they explored this question — that they discovered more subconscious resistance and hesitation than they might have expected.)
Receptivity is the foundation of psychic development. You have to be open, prepared, willing … you’re already able. Deciding to be truly open is the profound shift that will allow your life to be assisted by psychic ability, by your spirit guides, by your guardian angels, by your ascended master teachers.
So decide to be psychic. Decide to be open to your guides. You are no longer trying, you are learning. Start wherever you are and grow from there. Forget about the past or the future. Just turn the light on right now. If you find yourself thinking “I haven’t been…” or “What if I can’t…” or “I’m not…” Start reframing these messages to the self by tacking on the word yet.
What if you haven’t — yet? What if you can’t — yet?
Then progress to full affirmations, inverting all these negative statements. I can’t hear my guides simply becomes I can hear my guides. (Notice the powerful shift that occurs by taking out two tiny characters — one punctuation mark; one letter.)
Is the statement “I can not hear my guides” really anymore accurate than “I can hear my guides”? Is either expression any more true than the other? What — who — makes that so?
You can certainly willfully choose to reinforce either one. Can you consciously train yourself to reframe these statements in accordance with your highest intention?
Reframing Tip
Whenever you catch yourself saying “I can’t…” Simply immediately reframe and restate the exact same sentence and remove the negative.
I can is a true statement. You may not have been able in the past. You may not feel you can right at this moment. And the future… you absolutely do not know or have access to that moment yet. But you can create it, in the present.
So what if you have not before? That doesn’t mean you can not. Simply say I can — an absolutely profoundly true recognition of your free will and your intentions.

Yes!
When I first became strongly aware of my Daimon, my Spirit Guide, whatever he is, he didn’t say anything, and it seemed as if he never would–questions I asked him went unanswered, and he would just look at me silently. Rather like Harpo Marx, come to think of it, though that’s neither here nor there.
But when I sat down with him and said, “I hear you, I am listening” and then sat back and waited, quietly and openly, well. Since then he hasn’t shut up! It was the single most important thing I’ve done to open the lines of communication.
I think you’ve hit on an important point, Slade - we have to decide to be psychic, and that’s not as easy a decision as we think. Because once we decide that we CAN hear our Guides …. my goodness, we’d actually have to act on that guidance, wouldn’t we? Our lives would change. Our excuses would be gone - we’d have to do things outside of our comfort zone that inspire growth and expansion.
This article is a great invitation - awesome stuff!
Blessings,
Andrea
Hey Slade, this great post reminded me of how often people resist - ie ” I’m not psychic, that was just my intuition! ” It’s easier to think only a very special few can truly be psychic. The concept that we all are this way and just need to remember, just blows their mind!
You are so right those simple words ‘I can’t', do us no favors at all, but they can definitely sneak their way into our vocabulary !…
Thanks for the reminder, i shall be more vigilant…… “I Can , I Can , I Can….
Cheers, Helen
Thalia,
I absolutely relate to your experience. I had a very similar “turning point” several years ago. After years of passive, intermittent experiences, phases of feeling very connected and guided, interspersed with periods of intellectualizing and doubts… Well, the guides never went anywhere; I even think they may have resigned themselves to that stony-face quality you describe because of my willful ignorance… What changed was that I shifted — I remember the day clearly that I sat down to speak to them and said “Alright. Let’s work…”
And it did work. Nothing’s been quite the same since. All areas of my life have benefited.
Thanks for sharing that — I’m sure a lot of others can relate.
Andrea,
You noticed that I’m reclaiming the “p” word?
(Andrea and I have had a few private discussions about how the word psychic and its associations creates discomfort — even in me!)
As I’ve been teaching more “classes” — walking people through more Do-it-yourself approaches to divine guidance — I was struck by these admissions — things like a realization that we may be “playing too small,” as Patricia Singleton referred to it.
What is that all about? I wondered, and I realized that while no one may think you or I can relate to that, of course we can! We’ve all had some experience of this range of responsibilities that you identify so well…
There have definitely been times when I’ve willfully blocked my own development out of a “fear of success” or a “fear of what may be asked of me.”
Honestly, I’ve had to “rebuild” my belief system to allow for this expansion. The challenges you’ve listed here definitely point to the kinds of things that may be holding all of us back a bit.
I am grateful, as always, for your part of the conversation.
Helen!
“I’m not psychic, that’s just my intuition” is brilliant — I want that on a T-shirt!
Way back in Feb 2007 I wrote a post asking Do You Believe Psychics Have Abilities You Don’t?
Maybe, going back to Andrea’s comment, passing the “special” ability on to others means that people don’t have to step up their games and play at an advanced level of awareness. To those who are given much, much is expected…
Can and Can’t are deceptively close/similar in terms of the way we communicate with ourselves, the language belies the enormous energetic difference between the meanings.
Quote: If you find yourself thinking “I haven’t been…” or “What if I can’t…” or “I’m not…” Start reframing these messages to the self by tacking on the word yet.
It occurred to me while reading that paragraph that it might be even more productive to prepend those sentences with “So what?”
So what if I can’t hear anything this time?
So what if I haven’t been meditating?
So what if I’ve never received a message before?
So what if I’m a beginner?
So what if I haven’t been practicing patience or compassion?
So what if the last time I tried it didn’t work?
So what if my thoughts are too loud, I feel blocked, I don’t really believe it will work, I’m not as good as Slade or Jonah or that chick over there?
So what? What do I have to lose?
Nothing. Except maybe some crap (ehem) that hasn’t been serving me anyway.
I am open to being psychic. I do hear my spirit guides speaking in whatever form they choose. I play a significant part in the forming of my world.
Slade, thanks for what you are teaching me.
Patricia
Jonah,
I like your “So what if…?” reframing tip — a great first step in transitioning from the can’t to can!
Thanks for sharing your additional strategy — I’m sure that will resonate with others who are reading this.
Patricia,
I love it that you launched your affirmations right here — name it and claim it and make it so!
Slade,
This has been a dream of mine for many years now. I just don’t know if I am ready or scared to embrace it. How do you know? I found you through Patricia and plan on spending a lot of time reading! Maybe you can help me!
Alright Slade you caught me. If I don’t want to improve my psychic abilities then why do I keep coming back and reading your stuff? Your title pissed me off when I first read it a few days ago because I had just finished yet another failed attempt to get my wonderfully exasperating guides to speak a little louder so I could hear them.
I have to assume from reading your post that they are already doing their best and the disconnection is fully my responsibility. Yet I find it fascinating that it’s taken them so long to even get on my radar.
But damn, like you said enough of the past. I’ll start fresh with the intention from here. The good news is that no resistance at all came up for me to the receptivity question. Yet I’m sure there must be some lingering doubts in there somewhere.
Thanks for this, it’s the right stuff at the right time and all that. I think I need to put some frequency in my intentions. I need to stay with this for a number of days in a row instead of just coming back to it when frustrated with project progress or some other outcome.
I want to hear my guides and I am in the midst of increasing my ability to do so!
Jenny,
Welcome — glad you found us!
It seems to me that if you have wanted to develop your intuition for years, and now you are here… Well, that timing seems significant to me — doesn’t it you?
Tom,
I find your reaction — being pissed off — extremely interesting. Thanks for honestly sharing that.
I feel you may be making this entirely too difficult. I was talking to a friend the other night and I used the analogy “looking on a higher and higher shelf, out of reach, for something that’s sitting on the floor…”
I absolutely agree with you that the intermittent “only when things are falling apart and I need help” practice is not ideal. You can’t have intuitive clarity in a moment of panic. Best to practice so that you can become confident. Make hay while the sun shines, right?
Check out my class before you crank that pedestal up any higher!
I’ve found that being open is the #1 thing you can do period, spirit guides or no guides. It simply transforms life in remarkable ways
